The Art of Borosilicate Glass Jewelry: Behind the Scenes at Beryeni

What is Borosilicate Glass?

Borosilicate glass is a material known for its exceptional durability, clarity, and resistance to thermal shock. Unlike traditional soda-lime glass, borosilicate glass contains boron trioxide, which gives it unique properties that make it ideal for creating fine jewelry.

At Beryeni, we work exclusively with premium borosilicate glass sourced locally within the UK craft community. This material allows us to create intricate, delicate designs that are surprisingly strong and lightweight  perfect for everyday wear.

The Traditional Glass-Working Process

Every Beryeni piece begins as a rod of borosilicate glass. Using traditional lampworking techniques, our glass artist shapes each piece by hand over an open flame, reaching temperatures of over 1,000°C.

This ancient craft requires years of skill and practice. The glass must be heated, shaped, and cooled at precise temperatures to create the flowing forms and vibrant colours that define Beryeni's aesthetic. It's a meditative process that connects modern design with centuries-old craftsmanship.

The Steps Behind Each Piece

  1. Heating: The glass rod is heated in the flame until it becomes molten and workable
  2. Shaping: Using gravity, tools, and breath, the artist shapes the glass into rings, pendants, or earring components
  3. Colour application: Colours are layered and blended while the glass is still hot, creating unique patterns
  4. Annealing: The piece is slowly cooled in a kiln to relieve internal stress and ensure durability
  5. Finishing: Metal components are added, and the piece is polished to perfection

Why Each Piece is Unique

Because every Beryeni piece is shaped by hand, no two are exactly alike. The natural variations in colour, form, and pattern are not imperfections — they're signatures of the handmade process.

When you wear a Beryeni piece, you're wearing a one-of-a-kind work of art. The flowing patterns in our Waves ring, the ethereal translucence of the Haze ring, the delicate petals of the Bloom earrings  each reflects the artist's hand and the unique moment of creation.

The Inspiration Behind the Designs

Founded by a glass artist in November 2025, Beryeni approaches jewelry as wearable sculpture. Our designs are inspired by photographs, music, and architecture translating visual and auditory experiences into tactile, three-dimensional forms.

The result is jewelry that's refined yet organic, minimal yet expressive. Each piece is designed to move between everyday wear and special occasions, balanced for comfortable, considered wear.

Sustainability in Glass Jewelry

Working with borosilicate glass offers inherent sustainability benefits. The material is incredibly durable and long-lasting, and our made-to-order model eliminates waste from overproduction.

By sourcing materials locally within the UK and working with long-established suppliers in the craft community, we support local artisans and reduce our environmental footprint. We also offer a repair service, extending the life of each piece and reducing the need for replacement.

The Future of Glass Jewelry

As consumers increasingly seek alternatives to traditional metal jewelry, borosilicate glass offers exciting possibilities. It's lightweight, hypoallergenic, and allows for colour and form combinations impossible with metal alone.

At Beryeni, we're proud to be part of East London's vibrant maker community, pushing the boundaries of what glass jewelry can be. Each piece we create is a testament to the beauty of traditional craftsmanship meeting contemporary design.
